PORTRAIT OF A PERSON NOT SURE WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT
PLACE WRITING AS ANIMATED DOCUMENTARY
Treading the line between documentary and fiction, these works are often intimate and personal portraits of isolated and communal entities deeply intertwined with the landscapes they inhabit and thus, embody. I use the word entities so as to suggest more than people but fauna, flora, memories, beliefs, histories, the singular, the figurative, the imagined, the experiential, the cultural, historical, and the collective - all that encompass place-persona.
Place writing is a consideration of more than mere setting, but attempts to understand our surroundings through it’s personae. These works cannot be objective, without bias or baggage - no work truly can. Instead, they unashamedly combine fact and fiction, accepting all that we are and can be in their creation. Art is not objective, nor should we view it as such.
